Annual Awards

CBI's competitions recognize outstanding work produced by affiliates in the prior year.

CBI Paper of the Year

The CBI Paper of the Year competition will award one $500.00 prize for an original research paper within the scope of CBI key research areas. The winner will present their work at an upcoming Buckeye Neurotrauma Lecture seminar. The winning paper and other submitted papers will be featured in CBI's annual report to Ohio State leaders.

Guidelines 

Please submit one peer-reviewed journal article published in calendar year 2024, along with a brief statement (max 150 words) on the relevance and impact of the paper in the field. A review team of Ohio State faculty representing multiple disciplines will evaluate submissions and select one winner. Only one paper per principal investigator will be considered.

CBI Image of the Year

The CBI Image of the Year competition will award multiple prizes for technique and creativity in capturing research images within the scope of CBI key research areas. Submitted images will be featured in CBI communications, at CBI Research Day, and in CBI’s annual report to Ohio State leaders.

Guidelines 

Please submit one still image (i.e. videos or animations are not eligible) produced as part of research activities. Submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges, as well as a “people’s choice” vote at CBI Research Day. Only one image per principal investigator will be considered. Submitted images must have been created by a member of the participating lab in calendar year 2024. Submissions must also include an accompanying description (max 1 page) that explains the content, purpose, impact, and technical qualities of the image.

Judges will include researchers and visual artists, and will evaluate images on technical proficiency, creativity/visual impact, and informational content. The competition will award one $250.00 prize for the panel winner, and $100 prizes for panel runner-up and people’s choice winner.

CBI Lannutti Innovation Award

In memory of John Lannutti, PhD (1959-2022), Professor of Materials Science & Engineering at The Ohio State University and foundational faculty advisor to the Chronic Brain Injury Program (CBI), the Lannutti Innovation Award recognizes one trainee each year whose work embodies the spirit of Dr. Lannutti’s interdisciplinary, innovative, and transformative research. 

Nomination & Eligibility

CBI Faculty Members (Mentors) may nominate one trainee (Nominee) from their lab per year who has engaged in outstanding interdisciplinary, innovative, and transformative research. Trainees may be at any level (undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral researcher) and their research must be within the scope of the CBI key research areas. 

Application

To apply for the 2025 Lannutti Innovation Award, please provide a single PDF document collating the following items by May 5, 2025:

  • a nomination letter (maximum 2 pages) from the Nominee’s primary Mentor, describing the nature ofthe Nominee’s work and personal characteristics; 
  • a second nomination letter may optionally be provided from a co-mentoring faculty member;
  • a statement from the Nominee (maximum 2 pages), describing their research experiences, professional goals, and personal approach to interdisciplinary, innovative, and transformative research;
  • the Nominee’s CV/resume; and
  • a supporting document exemplifying the Nominee’s research, such as a peer-reviewed publication, abstract, thesis, or appropriate equivalent.

Review & Award

Members of the CBI Faculty Advisory Board will review submitted materials for each Nominee and select one Awardee. Reviewers will represent multiple Ohio State colleges and disciplines. Additional reviewers may include University leaders and representatives for Dr. Lannutti’s family. Each application will be reviewed for completeness and compliance, interdisciplinarity, innovativeness, impact, and overall excellence. 

Awardees will receive a certificate and a $750 professional development award, which may be used for activities such as presenting at a conference (travel, registration, etc.), career development activities, or independent research. CBI requests Awardees to provide a report after one year to describe how this award has benefited their training and career.

The Julies

In celebration of Julie Pissocra, long-time staff member with the Chronic Brain Injury Program (CBI), The Julies recognize team members within the CBI community whose work and partnership fosters team culture, cohesiveness, and performance. 

Nomination & Eligibility

CBI affiliates may nominate one individual from their group each year who exemplifies collegiality, partnership, and team spirit. Nominees may be students, staff, or faculty and the nominating group must include at least one CBI faculty affiliate.

Application

To apply for the 2025 Julies, please email a single PDF document collating the following items to cbi@osu.edu by May 5, 2025: 

  • a nomination letter (maximum 2 pages) describing the nature of the Nominee’s efforts and personal characteristics; 
  • a supporting letter exemplifying the Nominee’s impact from at least 2 other group members 

Review & Award

Members of the CBI Faculty Advisory Board will review submitted materials for each Nominee and select two Awardees. Reviewers will represent multiple Ohio State colleges and disciplines. Each application will be reviewed for completeness, compliance, and impact. 

Awardees will receive a certificate and a $250 award, which may be used for professional development or team-building activities. CBI requests Awardees to provide a brief statement reflecting on this award and their team.
